Junjou Romantica (純情ロマンチカ, Junjō Romanchika, lit. "Pure-Hearted Romantica") is a yaoi/boys love manga series by Shungiku Nakamura. It is the origin of the Junjou Romantica series.

The manga series is ongoing in Japanese.

The English publisher Blu Manga (an imprint of Tokyopop) released the series as Junjo Romantica and stylized the title as Junjo Romantica ~Pure Romance~ on their website.[1] Twelve volumes were released in English before Tokyopop's closure in May 2011; the series is no longer licensed for English release.

Premise[]

It focuses on three storylines; the main couple, which comprises the bulk of the books, and two other male couples that provide ongoing side stories (Junjo Egoist and Junjo Terrorist).

Release[]

Junjou Romantica began serialization in 2002 Asuka Ciel magazine, published by Kadokawa Shoten. The first volume was released on June 2, 2003. The manga series is currently running in Emerald magazine, published three times a year.

The series is currently not licensed for English-language release. It was previously licensed in North America by Blu Manga, an imprint of Tokyopop, until Tokyopop's closure in May 2011. Twelve English volumes were released. Despite the series' popularity, other English-publishers are reluctant to pick it up due to its size; Jennifer LeBlanc of SuBLime Manga (an imprint of Viz Media that releases boyslove/yaoi manga) said that Junjou Romantica is "just too long and won't make a profit. Yaoi can't support series that are 20+ volumes."[2]

An attempt to gauge relative sales of manga titles by online vendors (based on publicly available "bestseller" listings) suggests that Junjo Romantica was the best-selling yaoi manga series of 2008 among online vendors. Volume 10 was #6 in the manga category of the New York Times "Graphic Books" weekly bestseller list for July 11, 2009, and volume 12 was #4 on the same list for September 10, 2010.
